We have considered how the mariner stays in the safe water when land is in sight and how new electronic devices give information of various sorts to assist him when it is not. We have learned about many of the instruments, charts, publications, and accessories for piloting, dead reckoning, electronic navigation, and even for some of the operations in the celestial navigation. Partly for review and partly for convenient reference, some of the tables, wrinkles, and procedures are assembled in the chapters for the part of navigation that for most people holds the greatest fascination the finding of position by the stars.
